Scotch whisky distillers have welcomed news that Scotch will have protected name status in Malaysia and Thailand.
Both countries, which import a combined GBP40m (US$65m) of Scotch whisky annually, have agreed to register Scotch as a geographical indication (GI).
Anyone in the countries selling whisky produced outside of Scotland and outside of specific production rules will no longer be able to label their products as Scotch.
“Consumers will be better protected from imitations and Scotch Whisky’s international reputation for excellence is being recognised,” said Alan Park, a legal advisor at the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA).
The SWA has worked with UK embassy officials in Malaysia and Thailand to secure GI status.
