Lower demand from the US caused wine exports from France’s Alsace region to fall in 2009, according to figures obtained by just-drinks from trade body, CIVA.

Exports fell by 8.6% in volume to 222,824 hectolitres (hl) and by 12% in value to EUR93m (US$119m), compared to 2008.

Shipments to the US dropped 32% in volume and 35% in value.

Exports to the EU, which include the biggest markets for Alsace wines – Belgium, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark – fell 7% in volume and 8.5% in value.

Shipments to China (excluding Hong Kong) leapt by 60%, although only totaled 1,072hl.

Sparkling wines, the crémant d’Alsace, are not included in the figures but only represent a small proportion of exports.
