Global exports of Burgundy wines continued to recover in the first six months of the year, but sales remain well below those prior to the economic crisis, according to trade body, the Bureau Interprofessionnelle des Vins du Bourgogne (BIVB).

Exports in volume and value for the six months to the end of June rose by 13% to 38.8m bottles and EUR252.7m respectively, the BIVB said yesterday (6 October). The figures show Burgundy has built on early signs of recovery at the end of 2009.

However, the BIVB said that exports for the first half of 2010 were still down significantly on the same period in 2008.

Shipments to the UK, Burgundy’s premier export market, increased by 20% in volume and 15% in value on the first half of 2009. But, when compared with the first half of 2008, the figures showed falls of 30% and 31% respectively. It was a similar picture for exports to Burgundy’s second biggest market, the US.

The BIVB said it expected marketing of the 2009 vintage to buoy recovery in the months ahead.
