French wine producer and trader, Fournier Père et Fils, has signed a EUR1m (US$1.4m) contract with Xiamen-based Utrans Supply Chain Management Co to distribute its wines in China.
The contract was signed during Chinese President Hu Jintao’s state visit to France last week. It follows a two-year trial period between Fournier and Utrans.
“The UK and the US spearhead our export sales and China only accounts for about 2% of the total,” Fournier’s export manager, Guillaume Pinson, told just-drinks. “But it is a rapidly maturing market and there is significant scope for growth.”
The contract will cover Fournier’s AOC wines such as Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, as well as vins de pays and around 250 quality wines from across France.
“The contract is for one-year because this is how the Chinese approach their commercial arrangements, but we are hopeful it will be renewed,” Pinson said.
