US vintner Jackson Family Wines has acquired the Oregon-based white wine blends brand Big Salt for an undisclosed sum.

Founded by John and Ksenija House ten years ago, Big Salt produces white blends which are sold in the US in on- and off-premise locations.

Big Salt will be the fifth Oregon winemaker in Jackson Family Wines’ portfolio, joining the likes of Gran Moraine and Zena Crown Vineyard.

When asked on the rationale for the purchase, a Jackson Family Wines’ spokesperson pointed to an “interest in white blends, which are becoming increasingly attractive to consumers, based on market research and trends”.

The Houses’ Big Salt brand previously sat under their Ovum Wines business, which also makes brands like Ezy tgr and Ovum, according to its website.

Big Salt’s wines are produced by third-party vineyards “that stretch from the Columbia River Gorge to southern Oregon”, Jackson Family Wines said in a separate statement.

“The Houses don’t own these vineyards, but they have strong ties to the farmers who tend them.”

Following the transaction, Big Salt’s current growers and vineyard partners would remain the same, the group said, adding that founders John and Ksenija House will remain “deeply involved” with the brand in winemaking and brand stewardship roles.

“The goal is simple, to keep what makes Big Salt special, while giving the brand the support to grow thoughtfully and sustainably,” the California-based wine group said.

The Big Salt portfolio includes four wines: Big Salt, Big Salt Orange Rosé, Pnk Salt and Orange Love, which are being sold by Jackson Family Wines at an RRP range of $19 to $24.

While the Big Salt and Pnk Salt wines are already on the market, Jackson Family Wines plans to bring the Big Salt Orange Rosé and Orange Love brands to US shelves later this year.

“Big Salt is exactly the kind of winery we want to see more of in the world,” said Chris Jackson, co-proprietor of Jackson Family Wines.

“John and Ksenija have built something honest and deliberate. Wines that are high-quality but unpretentious, rooted in place, and designed to spark curiosity. They’ve created a fresh, modern take on white blends that’s resonating with a new generation of drinkers. We’re here to back their vision, not rewrite it, and help Big Salt grow in a way that still feels true to who they are.”

Mr House added: “Jackson Family Wines gives us the ability to grow without compromising our values, our people, or our process. We get to stay and bring these wines to more tables.”

Last week, Jackson Family Wines confirmed it had shut a facility in Carneros, California, resulting in layoffs.

At the time, a company spokesperson said in a statement it had closed the site, affecting 13 positions.

In February, the business also named Tim Brown, a former Upfield and Nestlé executive, as its new CEO.
