Austria’s wine exports for 2024 are expected to have fallen from the previous year’s record figures, according to trade-association figures.

For the first three quarters of 2024, export sales fell by 5.1% to €175.3m while volumes dipped 0.1%, a report by Austrian Wine Marketing Board (ÖWM) said.

The ÖWM said export revenues for 2024 as a whole are anticipated to “drop slightly below” 2023 but are expected projected to surpass 2022 levels.

In 2023, Austria’s wine exports were worth €248m, largely driven by a “one-off surge” in sales to Germany.

During the first three quarters of 2024, sales to Germany, the largest export for Austria’s wines, dropped 9.4% to €73m. Volumes were flat.

Sales to the Nordic markets increased 1% to €20.4m on the back of a 1.2% rise in volumes.

However, sales to the next three largest markets – the US, the Netherlands and Switzerland – all declined, the ÖWM said.

In Austria, the domestic market faced an “overall subdued consumer sentiment in 2024”.

According to the annual report, covering the period from October 2023 to September 2024, wine sold through Austria’s multiple grocers fell 2.6% in volume terms compared to the previous 12 months, with revenue decreasing by 0.9%.

The ÖWM said the declines were mainly driven by “foreign wines”, which saw a drop of 5.8% in volume and 2.3% in revenue. In contrast, Austrian wines remained “relatively stable”, with declines of 1% in volume and 0.5% in revenue.
