Wine exports from Italy rose 10% in 2022, led primarily by demand for sparkling wines, according to an analysis of data from Istat by Italian farmers’ organisation Coldiretti.
The value of exports soared to €7.9bn ($8.73bn) last year, which Coldiretti reported being a new record.
The report claimed sparkling wines saw a 19% increase in value. Prosecco, the most consumed Italian wine in the world, booked a 22% rise. There was a 25% increase in exports to France to a value of €289m, with sparkling wines making up €107m alone.
The US was confirmed as the leading export market for Italian wines with a share of 23%. Value sales rose 8% in 2022 to €1.9bn, according to Coldiretti. The UK meanwhile spent €812m, showing an increase of 9%, while Germany saw a 5% increase to €1.2bn.
China broke the trend of increasing export sales by dropping 12% to €112m.
Italy produced 50.3m hectolitres of wine from 310,000 farms, a greater volume than France and Spain. Coldiretti claimed this “confirmed Italy’s leadership at an international level”.
