Exports of Chilean wine rose 6% between January and April 2003 compared to the same period in 2002, Chilean trade association Chilevid reported.

Total wine exports over the four-month period were valued at US$192.6m, compared to the US$180.9m obtained in 2002. Chile exported 120.7 million litres of wine in the first four months of 2003, 12% more than in the same period of the previous year.

But the average price of Chile’s wine exports continues to fall. However Chilevid described the sector’s performance as “acceptable” given the current trading climate. The average price per litre of Chile’s exports fell from US$1.70 in January-April 2002 to US$1.60 in the same period of this year.

The overall value of Chile’s wine exports was affected by a fall in the average value of a 12-bottle case from US$22.40 to US$20.88.

Chile’s best performer was exports of wine containers, whose average per-litre value rose from US$0.43 between January-April 2002 to US$0.47 in the same period of this year.
