Danone launches Oikos yogurt drink aimed at GLP-1 users

Danone said the Oikos Fusion product was created “specifically with GLP-1 and weight loss consumers in mind".

Danone has launched a drinkable yogurt product under its Oikos brand in the US which looks to target users of Ozempic and other GLP-1 weight loss drugs.

The product, called Oikos Fusion, is designed to help consumers build and retain muscle mass during weight loss.

A statement from the dairy giant's North American arm, said the new yogurt drink contains 23g of protein, 5g of prebiotic fibre, and key vitamins like B3 and B12 - as the brand seeks to support their consumer’s nutritional needs while taking weight loss medications.

Whitney Evans, director of nutrition and scientific affairs at Danone North America, told Just Drinks: “This is the first product that Danone North America and Oikos have brought to the yogurt aisle that is specifically created and positioned to support the unique nutrition needs of GLP-1 users and other weight loss consumers.

“While the brand remains focused on high-protein offerings, the Oikos portfolio is intentionally diversified - with each product delivering distinct, targeted benefits that meet specific consumer health goals."

Oikos Fusion is available in Walmart’s refrigerated section from this month, with a larger nationwide roll out due in October. The product comes in strawberry, mixed berry, and vanilla flavours.

Danone already advertises a range of "GLP-1 friendly choices" on its North American business' website, which include some of its Too Good & Co. yogurts and Oikos protein yoghurts and drinkable shots.

When asked how the new product differs to the drinkable Oikos product, Evans said the Oikos Pro Shots “offer 3.1 fl oz with 10 grams of protein for a quick protein pick me up, whereas Oikos Fusion is the first Oikos product created specifically with GLP-1 and weight loss consumers in mind".

Referring to data from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the American Society for Nutrition, the Obesity Medicine Association, and The Obesity Society, Danone said research has discovered that muscle mass makes up approximately 20% of weight lost when taking GLP-1s.

President of Yogurt at Danone North America, Rafael Acevedo said: "Pairing Danone's decades of science expertise with the Oikos' brand's emphasis on strength and high-quality protein enabled us to create something truly unique for people looking to maintain muscle mass while on a weight loss journey.”

He added: "The growing need for tailored nutrition solutions for people experiencing muscle mass loss is something we can expertly tackle.

“We know change takes strength and we believe weight loss isn't only about taking things away - it’s about adding and strengthening routines with nutrient-dense products that help people better meet their goals."
