Pernod has refused to be drawn on the reports it is looking to offload the Indian whisky brand but a sale would be understandable.
The coffee major, which is targeting €500m in savings, is centring its efforts on a “strategic” set of ten brands.
Diageo said it was looking to “optimise resources and support the sustainable future growth” of the business.
"Now we have a range that fits very well with cachaça and with mezcal and with Tequila, so it's a natural fit," co-founder Joyce de Haas said.
Annabell was made acting CEO earlier this year following the departure of managing director Steve Carden.
The Finland-based company said the move is part of its “tightening scope and US market entry plans”.
“Caution is still called for,” the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac said.
The Irish whiskey producer said the distillery is “open for business”.
