Several wine traders and importers are seeing cancellations and reductions in orders of French wines following an anti-France campaign in the US press over the country’s stance on war with Iraq.

No figures are available to gauge the scale of the dip, the head of the company promoting French vineyards in the Americas Jacques Thebault said, pointing to “isolated acts” of boycotting.

Nevertheless, he warned that it was very bad news for French wines, the US being a very competitive
market.

Last month, the chairman of the US House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, raised the question of possible sanctions being imposed on French wine and mineral water imports to the US.
