Private equity group Cinven has teamed up with Bass' former head to bid for Carling. While Cinven would benefit from Mr Napier's knowledge of the business, Carling may not be an ideal candidate for a private equity bid. The company would fit much better with Heineken's strategic interests, but the Dutch brewer is already facing distribution challenges, which Carling would make all the greater.
