The Coca-Cola Co has promoted Latin America regional president Alfredo Rivera to lead its North America division.

Rivera takes the helm of the company’s biggest regional unit in sales terms with immediate effect, Coca-Cola said yesterday. He succeeds Jim Dinkins, who is retiring after 30 years with the soft drinks giant.

The 59-year-old Rivera, who has spent 23 years at Coca-Cola, was appointed Latin America president in 2016. His previous roles include president of the Latin Centre business unit.

“Alfredo has had a remarkable career in Latin America, which is made up of a large number of highly complex and diverse markets,” said group CEO James Quincey. “Alfredo has built a networked organisation that is positioning our business to emerge stronger from the current pandemic. He is a strong successor for the top role in our flagship North America market, where he will build on the great progress we’ve seen under Jim’s leadership.”

Coca-Cola’s North America unit has been badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. In H1 results released last month, the company’s sales in the region fell 8%. Latin American sales, meanwhile, dipped by just 1% in the same period.
