The horse-trading has begun between Distell, the Competition Tribunal and the Competition Commission about the future of some of the company’s proprietary spirit brands.
This follows the merger between Distillers Corporation and Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery and the resulting competition ruling.
After the first day of hearings, both Distell and the Tribunal declined to divulge details about the nature of the discussions.
They intend meeting again on 6 June in an attempt to find an equitable solution which will satisfy the Tribunal about the future of certain proprietary spirit brand categories where Distell has an overwhelming share of the market.
