The number of applications made for wine-related patents dropped by more than a third in the year to the end of June, data shows.

Between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022, some 376 applications were lodged, GlobalData, Just Drinks’ parent, suggests.

In the corresponding period a year later, that number dropped by 35% to 245, the research and intelligence group said.

GlobalData’s Patent Analytics database contains global figures on the patents filed – and granted – by businesses across multiple sectors. Each patent is classified by theme, including those linked to areas such as the environment or health and wellness.

The most common classification in both periods was related to the ‘environment’. Of the applications filed in the year to the end of June 2022, 45 were classified as such. In the 12 months to the end of June this year, that figure had dipped to 41.

Looking at where the patents were filed, China topped the list in both years, with 273 in the year to the end of June 2022 and 192 a year later.
