Between 2003 and 2004 Russian will begin spending more on beer rather than on vodka, according to Business Analytica research.

In a statement today the press service of the Russian Brewery Union said in 2002 the average Russian spent 42% of his alcohol and beverage budget on vodka and 36.8% on beer. Compared with 2001, vodka consumption share (in money terms) declined in 2002 by 3.1 percentage points (down from 45.1% in 2001), while beer grew by 2.2 percentage points.

Upon evaluation of the 4-year performance, analysts estimate that in 2003 vodka and beer spending will be 39.2% and 38.5% correspondingly, while in 2004 the figures will change to 36.6% for vodka and 39.7% for beer.

They then estimate that in 2005 vodka will decline to 34.2% of alcohol spending, while beer will grow up to 40.6%.

Deputy director of the Russian Brewers Union Secretariat Alexandr Troitsky claims that beer consumption growth is a reflection of economic sustainability. “Vodka and beer consumption in Russia are now mostly driven by psychological factors, as vodka is better demanded in crisis or recession terms,” Troitsky said.

He noted that economic factors are also important as in times of rapid food product price growth the market is saturated with counterfeited vodka which is traded at marginally low prices and is in demand amongst the consumers.
