Coffee is the dominant sector in the French hot drinks market but its value is declining. Tea, on the other hand, is becoming more popular. In 2002, coffee was worth $1.53 billion, while tea sales were just $280 million. Despite impressive growth in the tea sector, which is set to reach $348 million in 2007, its small size means that it will not pose any short-term threat to the dominance of coffee.
