Police are now protecting Tequila’s main ingredient, agave, in a bid to stop thieves from stealing the rapidly diminishing cactus-like plant.The price of agave has soared since global demand for Tequila, Mexico’s most famous brand, has overtaken supplies of the crop, which takes up to 9 years to mature. Disease has also hit the region, threatening to kill what remains of the dwindling crop and since the agave plant was issued with a ‘special protection squad’ it has been reported that six arrests have already been made.Sarah Diston
