The Lithuanian press reported over the weekend that the liberalisation of the country’s alcohol industry could be postponed if a proposed bill is passed.

An amendment to the to law on alcohol control has been put forward by a small number of the country’s MPs.

They want social guarantees for employees of the alcohol producers, which could be achieved, they say, if liberalisation is put off for another six months or until January 2004.

Under the present alcohol control law, liberalisation of the Lithuanian alcohol market should start in June 2003.
