According to statistics from the Italian agricultural research agency, ISMEA, and Nielsen, wine and sparkling wine sales in the Italian domestic market fell by 4% in 2002 to 9m hectolitres. Bottled wine consumption fell by 3%, while bulk wine sales were down by 8.0%.

However, while sales of bottled table wine fell by 5%, and sales of table wine in bulk fell by 8.7%, the statistics showed that sales of DOC and DOCG wines recorded a 3% increase from 2001.
