Bordeaux wine trader Antoine Moueix-Lebegue, has been placed under administration having filed for bankruptcy several weeks ago.

Moueix-Lebegue, which was formed out of the merger of two local traders, employs 80 staff and posted a 2002 turnover close to €35m.

Two potential buyers of the company are said to have emerged. News of Moueix-Lebegue’s problems comes at a time when sales of Bordeaux wines are undergoing a significant slowdown.

The president of the Bordeaux wines federation Xavier Carreau accepted that the sector was going through a difficult spell. However, he pointed to the reasonable level of export volumes with the US and UK markets showing signs of picking up, in contrast to the French market which had weakened.
