The Danish brewing leader Carlsberg says it feels no pressure to merge with another international giant, according to an interview with its CEO, who also said he did not have ambitions to make the company one of the top three brewers in the world.

In the interview in Berlingske Tidende today, Nils Smedegaard Andersen said: “Carlsberg Breweries is of course looking at taking over other local breweries. But we feel no pressure to do something bigger like a large merger. Our way is organic growth and growth in the Carlsberg brand.”

During the piece Andersen was also quoted as saying that the group plans to concentrate on Western and Eastern European markets where the company is dominant and earnings are good.

Size, he said, was no longer an objective in itself. “We have no wish to be the No. 1, 2 or 3 brewer in the world,” Andersen said, adding that the company was a medium-sized player and that there was a long way to being the biggest.
