In an effort to distinguish it from rum, the Brazilian government has officially defined the country’s drink cachaca.
The country’s press said yesterday that cachaca had been entered on the official government register Diario Oficial.
The definition described cachaca as the typical and exclusive name of the alcohol sugarcane liquor, produced in Brazil with an alcohol content varying from 38 to 48%. It went on to say that cachaca is obtained through the distillation of fermented sugarcane must, with peculiar taste and smell characteristics, whose saccharose content can be up to 6.0 g per litre.
