ABARE said that, having already protected name of geographical origin like “Champagne”, the European Commission is trying to apply similar protection for such expressions as “superior”, “vintage” and “reserve”. It said that moves to have imported wines labeled as being produced with non-European methods might stigmatise them in the eyes of consumers.
AUSTRALIA: ABARE warning over EU non-tariff barriers
The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) has spoken out against barriers to Australian wine exports into the EU. In a report on the world wine market, ABARE warned that more non-tariff barriers to Australian wines are being seen in the EU which could impede further growth.
