Anheuser-Busch InBev has lined up a US$154m spend on a glass recycling facility in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná for its AmBev division. Expected to commence operations in 2025, the plant will produce bottles for the Beck's, Spaten and Stella Artois brands. The facility, which will operate on 100% renewable electricity and have the additional capability to run on biofuels, will produce bottles from broken and recycled glass, gathered by local businesses and specialised recycling firms. The goal for AmBev is to have 100% of its packaging returnable or at least made from recycled materials by 2025. “It will make a positive impact on several aspects of our brewing operations ecosystem," said the division's VP of sustainability & procurement, Rodrigo Figueiredo. "In addition to working toward our circular packaging goal, the plant will play an important role in helping us meet other sustainability goals, including having 100% purchased electricity coming from renewable sources." AmBev opened its first glass plant in Rio de Janeiro in 2008. Announced at the start of last month, AmBev has kicked off a plastic pilot programme during which it will swap out its plastic packaging for a bio-based thermoplastic composite created by Israeli tech firm UBQ Materials.
