From a Three Stooges beer to the ongoing development of dairy products as mainstream beverages, Mintel’s Global New Product Database continues to pick up on all the latest launches around the world. This month it reports from Canada, Asia, Italy and Africa.

A continuing feature within the GNPD, the energy drinks market is continuing to evolve and encompass a widening range of products. The market includes all kinds of products such as isotonic sport drinks, refreshment energy drinks and stimulation drinks. We have even started to see the development of sport/energy waters, which blur the distinction between a water and energy drinks. However, this month sees the first time a bitters aperitif brand has registered in the GNPD. Launched in Italy, the Ch1nó brand from Sanpellegrino has appeared in an energy version, formulated with royal jelly, ginseng, guarana and inositol. It is available in a 330ml metal can with a ring pull, and an additional foil cover for added effect.

The rest of this months database is dominated by the soft drinks sector.

Dream Foods is introducing several premium juice products in the US. Volcano Orange Juice is made from the juice of rare blood red oranges harvested in Sicily near the Mt. Etna volcano. It is an organic product. Also from the company comes a pure lemon juice, meant to be used as a mixer, which contains pure lemon oil in the cap to provide an extra zest of real lemon. Volcano Lemon Burst is not from concentrate and packaged in a lemon-shaped squeeze bottle.

Meanwhile, there has been quite a concentration of activity on the dairy front this month. The idea of ice cream or frozen sorbet in a pouch is not entirely new – Unilever launched its Solero Smoover frozen fruit sorbet in a pouch in spring 2002, and has since rolled it out across Europe. However, imitators are now appearing in Asia, positioning their products as frozen drinkable brands. Lotte, the Korea-based ice cream and confectionery supplier, has recently launched two products in its domestic market and Japan. New in Korea is Soleim, an “ice confection” in mixed fruits and cappuccino flavours, in a 130ml Cheer Pack pouch. The brand name translates as “snowfall”, the idea being that at – 4°C the contents become sufficiently liquid to drink through the spout. In Japan the company has introduced Coolish Cool Ice, an “ice cream to drink” in vanilla, cappuccino and key lime flavours. This is also sold frozen, in a 140ml pouch.

Another “drinkable” impulse ice cream has been introduced in Poland, and seems also to have been inspired by a Solero product, Solero Shots (ice spheres in cup-style containers so they can easily be poured into the mouth). The Polish product from Ice-Mastry is called Lodowa Alternatywa Inne Kulki x Kubku and comprises ice cream balls in a 100g paper & plastic tube with a foil sealed opening. Variants available are Blue, Pink, Green, and Orange editions.

Continuing on the dairy theme, flavoured milk, traditionally a children’s drink, is being given female and adult appeal in South Africa through the use of floral and herbal ingredients and a “soothing” positioning. The product in question is called Vanilla Blush, and has been launched by up-market retailer, Woolworths. It is a low fat milk with a vanilla, chamomile and rose flavour.

In Asia the GNPD has recently picked up a new iced milk tea product containing coffee jelly, packaged in an attractive polypropylene injection moulded “beaker”. A polypropylene shoulder is welded to the beaker, and the offset neck (for ease of drinking and pouring) is closed with a tamper-evident screw cap. The product is made in Taiwan and has now gone on sale in Singapore and Hong Kong .

Also in Asia, this time in China, a company called Vedan Food is making it easy to carry water around with the introduction of It’s Mine! It comprises a still drinking water packaged in a 400ml bottle with an attachment on the neck which enables it to hang around the waist or on a belt.

And finally. The troublesome trio of Curly, Larry, and Moe are back! Not in an old re-run of their comical show, but as the stars of The Three Stooges Beer presented by Lakeport Beverage. Carrying a 5% ABV, this beer is housed in a 6-pack container on liquor store shelves throughout Canada.
