Notably, the number of cybersecurity-related patent applications in the consumer industry was 213 in Q2 2023, versus 362 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 54% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Intel filed the most cybersecurity patents within the consumer industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 68 cybersecurity-related patents in the quarter, compared with 127 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Haier Group with 14 cybersecurity patent filings, BlackBerry (12 filings), and Brother Industries (11 filings) in Q2 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 62% share of total patent filings

The largest share of cybersecurity related patent filings in the consumer industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 62%, followed by China (19%) and Japan (8%). The share represented by the US was 28% higher than the 35% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
