Eight of Asahi Group Holdings’ domestic drinks factories have partially re-started operations as the Super Dry brewer tries to recover from the cyberattack that hit the business last week.

The company told Just Drinks today (6 October) all six of its breweries and two of its soft-drinks plants in Japan had “resumed operations” on Thursday.

However, a spokesperson said: “The factories are not yet fully operational.”

Asahi Group Holdings’ five other soft-drinks factories in Japan “will resume gradually in accordance with shipments”, the spokesperson added.

As of local time today, the group’s beer arm has only been able to restart brewing and shipping its flagship brand Asahi Super Dry.

The spokesperson said the company planned to restart the production of more SKUs next week.

“Asahi Breweries will resume shipments of 16 products from October 15, including Asahi Dry Zero, Asahi Zero, Clear Asahi and [whisky brand] Black Nikka Clear,” the spokesperson added.

The group also makes and sells food products including baby food and miso soup in Japan. All seven of the company’s food plants resumed operations on Thursday but have yet to come online fully.

Asahi Group Holdings announced a “systems failure” due to a cyberattack at its domestic business last Monday. Order-taking, production and distribution were hit.

On Friday, the company said the breach involved ransomware and could have led to data being stolen.

“I would like to sincerely apologise for any difficulties caused to our stakeholders by the recent system disruption,” CEO Atsushi Katsuki said on Friday. “We are continuing our investigation to determine the nature and scope of the potential unauthorised data transfer. We are making every effort to restore the system as quickly as possible, while implementing alternative measures to ensure continued product supply to our customers. We appreciate your understanding and support.”
