Waterford Distillery has launched another single malt Irish whiskey, this time distilled from what the company describes as an eco-friendly barley.

Biodynamic Luna is produced using “resurrected farming methods” such as growing grains following lunar cycles. The single malt has been aged for an unspecified period in a combination of first-fill and virgin US oak casks as well as in ex-Vin Doux barrels.

The expression joins Waterford’s ‘Arcadian Spirits’ and will be handled in the UK by Speciality Brands.

“Biodynamics is a self-contained farming system, but one that consists of the culmination of 16,000 years of agricultural optimisation – trial and error,” said Waterford CEO Mark Reynier. “There is an ever-increasing adoption of biodynamics in the search for intensity and purity of flavour in the wine industry so, if for the grape, why not the grain?”

Earlier this month, Jack Daniel’s brand owner Brown-Forman praised the return of a “level playing field” for whiskey as retaliatory tariffs on American whiskeys were removed.
