The leading US brewer, Anheuser-Busch, is set to unveil a major global sponsorship deal for its Budweiser brand with the Williams Formula One Grand Prix motor-racing team.

The announcement is expected to be made today. The deal is thought to be worth £50m (US$81.30m) over five years and will make Budweiser one of the Williams-BMW team’s three major sponsors.

Budweiser also sponsors NBA basketball, Major League Baseball and NASCAR motor-racing in the US. Budweiser has also been the official beer of the FIFA World Cup since 1986.

The Formula One business has been looking for new sponsors after legislation in many of the country’s where the races are run put restrictions on sponsorship by tobacco companies which have traditionally had strong links with the sport.

The announcement represents a considerable coup for Williams, as Anheuser had reportedly been considering teaming up with World Champions, Ferrari.
