A proposed ban on the sale of energy drinks to children under the age of 16 in the US state of Louisiana has been rejected.
The bill was offered at a senate committee meeting held last Wednesday (21 April), on behalf of a constituent who raised health concerns about the drinks, according to Bloomberg.
The bill, however, was rejected, the Committee confirmed to just-drinks today. Further details were not provided by the spokesperson.
It is understood senators on the committee said the proposal “went too far” and “improperly” singled out one set of drinks when others are “just as caffeinated”.
The publication noted that a similar bill that would ban the sale of energy drinks to anyone under 18 also failed to gain traction in the state of Massachusetts.
Last September, Red Bull criticised two Swedish retail chains after they announced a plan to ban energy drinks sales to children under the age of 15, citing health concerns. Sweden’s 7-Eleven and Pressbyran retail chains said they would ban sales of all energy drinks to under-15s.
