A list of Hollywood film stars is to join the calls for a boycott on French wine, as a response to France’s opposition to the war on Iraq.
A Hollywood publicist, Michael Levine, yesterday said that he had launched the boycott, which had a number of high profile celebrity supporters. He cited France’s “obnoxious” ingratitude for US help in World War II for his motivation.
Levine was quoted today saying: “I’ve had a lot of very, very well-known people ask. Let’s just say very, very, very big. I can’t say the names, but big household names.”
“I am asking Americans not to buy, drink or give French wine at all until they recover from their political amnesia. Nearly 200,000 Americans died to liberate France from World War II alone,” he said.
Levine’s move follows similar calls from a member of the House of Representatives two weeks ago. However, his stand is in opposition to a number of other celebrity figures who have spoken out against the war.
