The US Distilled Spirits Council has called for the Government to force companies to print ‘alcohol per serving’ information on drinks labels.
Dietary advice on drinks labels will be inconsistent without federal regulation, the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS) warned at the end of last week.
Current rules show spirits in an unfair light when compared with beer and wine, DISCUS believes.
It called on the US Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) to set a standardised Serving Facts label on all beer, wine and distilled spirits. This, it said, should include the serving size, calories per serving, alcohol content per serving, and the definition of a ‘standard drink’.
“The existing labeling rules for beer, wine and spirits are inconsistent and do not include basic information on all labels that would assist consumers in measuring and moderating their drinking,” said DISCUS’ president, Peter Cressy.
The trade body has asked TTB to revise its rules so that 1.5oz is the amount of alcohol in a standard serving of 80-proof distilled spirits.
