California appears close to becoming the first state in the US to ban the sale of sugary soft drinks in elementary and junior high schools.
Senator Deborah Ortiz has introduced a bill that will ban soft drink sales in elementary, middle and junior high schools from a half-hour before until a half-hour after the school day.
Schools will only be able to sell water, milk, drinks that are no less than 50% fruit juice with no added sweeteners, and sport drinks designed to replace electrolytes.
The Governor of California Gray Davis, yesterday said: “Our responsibility to children is not only to educate them, but also make sure they are as healthy of mind as they are of body.”
Governor Davis also promised to sign the Bill.
On top of this Senator Tom Torlakson has introduced a bill that will make school boards approve all contracts between schools and vending machine companies who wish to install machines for soft drinks.
