Soft-drink companies will be banned from sponsoring London’s Olympic bid. A report in today’s Independent claims that fund-raisers for London’s bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games have drawn up a blacklist of companies including political organisations, arms manufacturers, tobacco companies, fast food companies and soft-drinks makers.
The chairman of the bid team, Barbara Cassani, intends to raise a third of the £30m cost of the bid from the private sector. She is concerned, however, that donations from soft drinks and fast food companies could undermine the cause of promoting the health benefits of sport.
The decision comes at a time when obesity is one of the main media topics in the UK. The Food Standards Agency has recently launched a consultation on the advertising of foods and drinks to children, with a view to making recommendations to the Government early next year. The move by the fundraisers is likely to be supported by the Government, the report claims.
Sponsorship deals are regulated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is also responsible for deciding which city will be awarded the games. The IOC has 11 global sponsors, including Coca-Cola and McDonald’s.
