>Cumbrian brewer Jennings Brothers announced a jump in interim pre-tax profits yesterday.

The increase of 16% to £1.79m (US$3m) came on the back of a rise in sales of the company’s Cumberland Ale. Sales of the beer, featured in the film Calendar Girls, rose by 24% year-on-year. Jennings had played a large part in the distribution of the original calendar.

Chairman John Rudgard told the Financial Times: “Trading in September was in line with the board’s expectations, with turnover growth broadly in line with the first six months.”
