Diageo’s began production of its Captain Morgan rum brand at its Scottish plant in Leven, Fife, yesterday, following a £2.6m investment package, including new processing plant and technology.
The company said that rum is still distilled in the Caribbean and shipped to Scotland. The rum is matured and blended at Diageo’s Menstrie Bond, before being bottled at Leven.
Diageo took ownership of the brand in 2001 as part of the acquisition of the Seagram wines and spirit business. Production will amount to 500,000 cases per year of Captain Morgan, Morgan’s Spiced and Captain Morgan’s Black Label.
Allan Burns, Joint Executive Director of Diageo Scotland, said: “This is certainly a boost for our manufacturing and supply team. Being awarded the production and bottling of Captain Morgan rum is the culmination of a lot of hard work and a significant investment on the part of Diageo Scotland.
“As is always the case, quality, service and cost are imperative in sustaining globally competitive manufacturing. However, we are focussed on delivering a competitive edge through innovation and flexibility in all areas of the business. I am delighted that we could demonstrate that we had the capacity and skills necessary to meet the market demands of Captain Morgan here in Scotland.”
