The president of the Tax Free World Association has played down concerns that terrorism warnings in Europe could impact travel-retail sales by reducing traveller numbers.
The US and UK Governments last weekend advised the public to be wary of visiting crowded places or popular attractions in major cities in France and Germany. Authorities acted after what they said was intelligence that individuals linked to al-Qaeda were plotting commando-style attacks on European cities.
“The duty free and travel retail industry is naturally concerned about any travel advice which might adversely affect passenger numbers and therefore sales revenues,” said Erik Juul-Mortensen, president of TFWA.
“However, international aviation has lived with the threat of terrorist activity for several years and yet travel and travel retail have continued virtually unabated. TFWA, our members and associates will continue to monitor the situation very closely and heed the advice of our government representatives.”
The TFWA World exhibition in Cannes begins on 18 October.
