The group was originally going to close Meekma in December 2001 and has now decided to go ahead with its plans having failed to find a buyer for the facility. The distillery was founded in 1916 and was acquired by Remy Cointreau in 2000.

The French wines and spirits group, Remy Cointreau, has announced that it is to close its Dutch distillery, Meekma, located in Leeuwarden in the north of the country.
