Canada’s Temple Lifestyle Brands has expanded its functional beverage portfolio with the acquisition of local business Rise Kombucha.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The purchase was backed by “Québec-based impact investors” led by local investment fund Fondaction.

In a statement yesterday (3 September), Montreal-based Temple said its support will help the kombucha brand “scale faster”, by “expanding its reach, bringing new innovations to market, and unlocking additional value for consumers and retail partners”.

Rise Kombucha, set up in Montreal, Quebec in 2008, produces a range of low-calorie and low-sugar kombucha drinks.

Its products are manufactured in a facility in Montreal, which Temple will also snap up as part of the deal, the company told Just Drinks.

Rise’s portfolio includes flavours like blueberry and maple, mint and chlorophyll, and fresh ginger.

The business sells exclusively in Canada and has no immediate expansion plans, Temple said, noting there is “lots of room for growth within Canada”. 

Charles Chang, former chairman of Rise’s board, believes that Temple is “uniquely positioned to unlock the brand’s next phase of growth with the scale, operational strength, and expertise to make it happen.”

Christopher Magnone, co-founder and CEO of Temple, said, “Bringing Rise into our family is more than an acquisition, it’s a powerful step forward in our mission to revolutionise better-for-you beverages. It brings us closer to our north star: 100 million better-for-you beverages consumed annually by 2035.”

Temple told Just Drinks that Rise had “no active founders in the day to day operations of the company for the last several years”.

It added: “The prior board was dissolved at the close of the transaction as is customary.”

Temple, which also owns the Thirsty Buddha organic coconut water brand, said that the acquisition aligns with its mission to build a “category-defining platform in functional beverages.”

While the group plans to focus on the Canadian market with Rise, the business is considering international expansion for Thirsty Buddha, which presently operates solely in Canada.

“We are currently exploring potential opportunities for expansion into global markets for mid 2026,” it told Just Drinks.
