Figures released yesterday show a rise in Spanish wine exports for the first eight months of 2003, but a drop in prices. The Spanish wine federation FEV said yesterday that exports totalled €882m (US$1.05 billion), a rise of 4.4% year-on-year.
Although the amount of wine exported rose, prices of Spanish wines sold abroad actually dropped. FEV said that 794.2m litres were exported in 2003, a rise of 22.3%, while prices fell by 14.5% to an average price of €1.1 per litre.
Germany imported the most of Spain’s exported wines, selling 19.6%, followed by the UK with 14%. Although exports of wines with Protected Denomination of Origin (PDO) increased by 2.6% in volume, their value remained flat. The value of table wine sales exports increased by 26%, while volume rose by 37%.
FEV reported that the value of exports increased in spite of the price drop thanks to increased sales of less expensive and non-bottled wines abroad.
