An historic Stellenbosch winery, dating back to 1699, complete with its own Russian museum of art and culture, has been placed on the market, with an asking price of between R25 and R35 million.
Dentist turned businessman, Dr Mark Voloshin, who has numerous foreign business interests is relocating to Europe to be able to manage them more effectively, according to Del Terwin, his MD on the 145-hectare property,
About 50 prospective buyers have expressed an interest in the property, but they will have to move quickly to secure the deal as it is due to come under the hammer on 20 March, according to auctioneer, Michael James.
The winery, which has 66 ha under vine, includes a manor house built in 1790, an upmarket restaurant, tasting and conference centres and about R5 million worth of wines either in the bottle or fermenting from the harvest that is coming to an end.
Voloshin purchased the winery in 1994 and developed a high profile within a short period of time.
Terwin said the businessman found Hazendal was lifestyle investment, in which he could not fully participate and together with the majority of his interests overseas, he decided to dispose of it.
