The agreement, initialled in Warsaw in October, was formally adopted by the Commission on Friday and, if accepted by EU ministers, will come into effect early next year. Duties will also be eliminated for other drink products including tea and coffee extracts.

Poland has agreed to reduce preferential duties on spirits by 30% and those on vermouths by 50% under a deal reached with the European Commission. In return, the EU will allow duty-free entry for Polish confectionery.
