According to a statement from US brewer, Anheuser-Busch, the Nigerian Trademark Office has refused the Czech brewer, Budejovicky Budvar, the rights to register the Budweiser name in Nigeria.
Anheuser-Busch, the largest brewer in the world, said it had successfully enforced its rights to the Budweiser trademark in Nigeria.
“This decision affirms our right to the Budweiser name, as many other courts have agreed, while supporting our view that Budvar has no right to the Budweiser name,” said Stephen J. Burrows, president and chief executive officer of Anheuser-Busch International, Inc.
The dispute in Nigeria is a further chapter in the ongoing David and Goliath battle between the US and Czech brewers over the rights to the Budweiser name in countries all over the world.
