Consumers in Mexico are now the largest drinkers of Coca-Cola products, according to the company.
Per-capita rates now see each Mexican drinking the equivalent of 487 bottles, compared with a figure of 436 in the US.
Coca-Cola de Mexico, a unit of U.S. beverage giant Coca-Cola Company, said in a press release that sales in the country grew 7% in 2002, almost double that of the bottled drinks industry as a whole, which rose just 4%. Coke now holds 23% of the non-alcoholic beverage market.
Coke puts the increases down to investments by its 15 Mexican bottlers, greater market share and the introduction of new brands. Three brand launches last year now brings the total of Coke products available in the country to 15.
“Thanks to (good) planning, Mexico accounted for 46% of Coca-Cola’s sales volume in the Latin American region,” the press release said.
