The Coca-Cola Company has made its first foray into the African market for its Dansani water, with the roll out of the bottled water brand in Kenya, according to local press reports.

The reports said Coke would be spending Sh640m (US$8.77m) in 2003 to launch non-carbonated beverages. It is the second launch in the country within the last few months, following the introduction of its Bibo range of fruit juices.

The water for Dansani is to be produced at a plant Nairobi, following a joint investment by Coke with eight local bottlers, who are Nairobi Bottlers, East Kenya Bottlers, Flamingo Bottlers, Equator Bottlers, Coastal Bottlers, Kisii Bottlers, Rift Valley Bottlers and Mt Kenya Bottlers.

Coke is to provide 38% of the investment with the partners making up the rest.

“This investment in new production facilities is not only a vote of our continuing confidence in the Kenyan economy but, a major investment has also been made in training Kenyans in the operation of this sophisticated bottling technology,” said William Egbe, the Coca-Cola region manager for East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands.
