Baltic Beverage Holding (BBH), the brewing joint venture owned by Carlsberg and Scottish & Newcastle (S&N), has acquired the Kazakstan brewery, Ak-Nar, for DKr190m.

BBH has acquired the total share capital of the brewer, which is based in the Almaty, from the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and one private investor. The deal remains subject to approval from regulatory authorities.

The brewery has a capacity of 0.6m hectolitres, but Carlsberg has said that the recently built facility could be expanded at relatively low cost. BBH already owns 76% of the Irbis brewery, also located in Almaty.

In addition to its two operations in Kazakstan, BBH owns 16 other breweries, four in Baltic states, 10 in Russia and two in Ukraine. The company produced a total of 29m hectolitres of beer in 2002.
