The company attributed the increased losses to weaker beer sales and the price war being waged among Japan’s major brewers. Sapporo said cost-cutting measures had been unable to offset the massive sales decline, resulting in an operating loss of Y1.27 billion for the half, compared with an operating profit of Y2.69 billion in the first half of 2001. It said overall beer sales fell by 6% in volume terms and stronger sales in happoshu had failed to compensate for the reduced beer volumes.
