By GlobalDataJapan's Ministry of Finance has proposed to brewers that the tax on "happoshu", the low-malt beer, be increased by Y20.47 per 350ml from May 1, 2003. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Tax System Research Commission has outlined its plans to raise the taxes on happoshu, wine and some other alcoholic beverages which currently enjoy lower tax rates than beer and sake. However, the planned tax increases have met strong opposition from the drinks industry.
