The Indian Ministry of Food Processing and the country’s alcohilc rtade associations are to discuss ways to promote the devlopment of India’s domestic wine production,
According to local reports the meeting will be held on January 17, between the Ministry, the All India Distillers’ Association (AIDA) and wine manufacturers from the Karnataka-Maharashtra region.
Indian production of wine totals some 500,000 cases a year, only a fraction of the 78m cases of spirits produced and sold every year by domestic companies.
And many of the domestic majors have entered into marketing ventures with leading wine companies from France, Italy, Australia and Chile, at the expense of local producers. Added to the stigma attached to Indian produced wine, the plans to promote Indian wine therefore have met with scepticism.
However, LN Batra, secretary-general, AIDA said: “Indian manufacturers can offer products at half the price of imported wines. While wine imports may increase market awareness about the product, it will be the cheaper priced domestic wines that will help grow the domestic market from the present 500,000 cases market.”
